Until January 13, 2019, Genesis Ezebong was a trusted domestic staff in House No 222, Ikorodu Road, Palm Groove area of Lagos Mainland household of Ms. Titilope Akeredolu. He was taking charge of the domestic chores in the house. Madam was pleased with him, and he too seemed pleased with madam, until the unspeakable event that started around 10:30am that Sunday morning.
Ms. Akeredolu left the house early for church, leaving her domestic staff back at home. The local security man was attentive by the main entrance gate. No issues.
But by 10:30 a.m., her phone started ringing frenetically during the church service. This is unusual. It was the security man at home. She managed to pick the call, wanting to tell him she was in the middle of the day’s sermon and all reports should be pended till when she returned from the church. Alas, she got the shock of her life!
That January 13, 2019, her home at No. 222 Ikorodu Road, Palm Groove, Lagos, has been under siege by armed robbers, and more devastating, led by her trusted Genesis. She could hardly hold herself. She excused herself from the church and headed home.
Ms. Akeredolu was shocked to listen to the security man recounting his experience.
She immediately reported the case at the Palm Groove Police Station. The detectives moved in immediately, tracked the suspects, and got them all arrested.
Arrested with Genesis Ezebong, his brother, Michael, and one Ikade Moses. The three were properly identified to have carried out the robbery operation.
They were arraigned on December 18, 2020, before Hon. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, sitting at the Ikeja Special Offences Court while the trial commenced on January 11, 2022.
The prosecution counsel, Omowumi Bajulaye, during the arraignment of the convicts, had told the court that they committed the offence of conspiracy and armed robbery on January 13, 2019, at No 222 Ikorodu Road, Palm Groove, Lagos.
She said that the trio while armed with cutlass, shovel and other dangerous weapons, robbed one Daniel of one Compact Laptop, one Apple laptop, gold and costumes, jewelleries, Blackberry phones, one digital camera, soccer shoes and two other phones belonging to one Titilope Akeredolu.
The prosecutor told the court how Akeredolu’s domestic worker conspired with others, who were armed with dangerous weapons, broke into his boss’s house with his gang after he had left to church, and locked the security man as well as other occupants in the toilet.
Principal witness, Ms. Titilope Akeredolu said after she went to church on Sunday morning, she received a call from the security man gateman who told her that the first convict, Genesis Ezebong, her domestic staff went to her house with cutlass, and broke into her apartment to rob.
She told the court that the gateman narrated the robbery incident to her, how they were locked in the toilet, and how the convicts broke into her room around 10.30am.
After reviewing the evidence of the prosecution and defence of the three accused, Justice Taiwo, of the Ikeja Special Offences Court found the three young men guilty of the offence of conspiracy and armed robbery preferred against them by the Lagos State Government. She therefore sentenced Genesis Ezebong, his brother, Micheal, and one Ikade Moses, to life imprisonment.
In her judgement, Wednesday (14 September) the judge held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the circumstantial evidence against the defendants.
The prosecution, had during trial, called three witnesses and tendered documents such as defendants’ statements which were admitted as exhibits.
The witnesses who had testified before the court included Inspector Okunade Olumuyiwa, Titilope Akeredolu, and Investigative Police Officer (IPO), and Inspector Olawale Oni.
